I'm a big fan of Mocka - I stocked most of my nursery including cot and change table with their range - and this is a sleek and lightweight Scandi-inspired rocker that would go really well in any modern baby's room. It does have quite a deep recline which some shorter mums said they found a bit challenging to get in and out of, but others said they loved because it helped them completely relax while feeding. What should I look for when buying a rocking chair for my nursery?

Probably the most important thing to consider is comfort - you'll be sitting in this chair for long periods of time, often in awkward positions while trying to feed or settle your baby. It's important to make sure your chair is super comfortable and supportive. A chair with lumbar support is great - either with a built-in or added cushion - and comfortable armrests are important to be able to give yourself a rest while propping up your baby.

You also want it to be made from durable, easy-to-clean fabric. While your rocking chair probably won't suffer quite as many spills, spews and poos as, say, your cot might, it's still good to get one that is easy to clean because babies are babies, and accidents will always happen.

Finally, consider the size of the chair vs the size of the room. A large chair might feel super sturdy, but if it takes up too much space in a small nursery it will quickly feel like an imposition. Similarly, a chair that is too light and flimsy might just end up in the way when you decide it's more comfortable to feed on the couch.

Do I really need a rocking chair?

We've said before: when it comes to babies, the only things you ACTUALLY need are something to dress them in and a safe place for them to sleep. Everything else is just 'nice to have'. But there is no doubt most babies are pretty bad at sleep and there is also no doubt most babies are calmed by a gentle rocking motion. And at 3am when you're exhausted and half asleep yourself, it's certainly easier to rock them in a chair than on your feet, back and forth for hours on end. If you have space and you have the budget, I'd say a rocking chair is a smart addition to your nursery. If nothing else, extra comfy chairs are never unwanted and can always do double duty later on as a cosy couch for storytime or in your study or living room.
